V.I.V.A. Sustainability and Culture

Short description:

VIVA Sustainability and Culture is the project of the Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea promoting sustainability in the wine sector since 2011. The purpose is to create a production model that respects environment and promotes Italian territories and wine culture, in order to protect Italian wines quality and provide fair and transparent information on the international market.

VIVA aims to improve the sustainability performances in vineyards and wine production through the analysis of four indicators: AIR, WATER, VINEYARD and TERRITORY.
The pilot phase, involving a number of major Italian wineries and completed in 2014, was conducted with the scientific collaboration of OPERA, the Research Centre for Sustainable Agriculture of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore and Agroinnova, the Centre of Competence of the University of Torino. It led to the definition of technical specifications to evaluate the sustainability in wine production, that now serve as a reference for companies who want to achieve the validation foreseen by the project. From June 2014 onwards, all national wineries can join the VIVA project.
